Böbl
Böbl
Böbl is a physics-based, water-themed metroidvania for the NES. You're a bubble — water carries you, but touching a solid block pops you. Explore a connected underwater world, collect powerups that unlock new movement, and hunt down all eight hidden duckies. Built by Morphcat Games for NESdev Compo 2019.
Controls
- Move: Arrow Keys (D-Pad)
- Dive / jump: hold X (A) to push down through the water, then release to spring up
- Double jump: press Z (B) in mid-air (once unlocked)
- Climb a waterfall: hold Z (B) as you come out the side of a waterfall tile
- Reset to the options screen: hold Shift + X + Z (Select + A + B)
Powerups
- Iron Böbl: smash through breakable blocks, and bounce off a solid tile once without popping.
- Double Jump: a mid-air second jump that also lets you scale waterfalls.
Modes
- Zen Mode: explore with no deaths — great for kids or anyone who finds it punishing.
- Ghost (time trial): race a recording of your own best run, Mario Kart-style. It needs 32KB battery-backed save support, which not every browser emulator provides, so it may not record in all setups.
- Duck Randomizer: each duck hides in one of three spots, shuffling the hunt for extra replay value.
Tips
- You don't really jump — you control depth. Hold to sink, release to rise, and ride the buoyancy through gaps.
- Solid blocks are instant death, so plan your floats; water is always the safe path.
- Explore everywhere — eight duckies are hidden across the map, with a secret ending for finding them all.
